My Wealthy Sister Gave Mom $20 for Her 70th Birthday and Said, ‘At Her Age, She Doesn’t Need Much’ – Then I Got an Idea for Her Gift

My sister showed up to Mom’s 70th birthday carrying a designer handbag that probably cost more than several months of my car payments.

Melissa had always been the successful one in the family.

Big house.

Luxury vacations.

A husband who owned several dental clinics.

So naturally, I expected her to make a big production out of Mom’s birthday gift.

Instead, she opened her expensive purse, pulled out a twenty-dollar bill, slipped it into a birthday card, and handed it across the table.

Then she laughed.

“At her age, she doesn’t really need much.”

Mom smiled politely.

She had cooked dinners when Melissa worked late.

She had helped whenever the family needed something.

And years earlier, when Melissa and her husband were trying to buy their first home, Mom had even dipped into her retirement savings to help them.

So hearing Melissa joke that a seventy-year-old woman “didn’t need much” made my blood boil.

I almost confronted her right there at the table.

Then I remembered something.

A wooden box in Mom’s bedroom.

Months earlier, while helping her clean out a closet, I had seen what was inside.

Old report cards.

Childhood drawings.

Photographs.

Hospital bracelets.

Mother’s Day cards.

And two small notebooks filled with dates and numbers I hadn’t understood.

Suddenly, I had an idea.

“Mom,” I said, “I actually forgot your real present at home. Can we do gifts again tomorrow?”

Melissa laughed.

“You forgot her birthday present?”

I ignored her.

The following afternoon, everyone came back for leftover cake.

This time, I placed a large wrapped box in front of Mom.

Melissa leaned back with an amused expression.

Mom opened it.
