WHILE TAKING A WALK, I WATCHED MY HUSBAND WALK INTO A HOTEL WITH MY CLOSEST FRIEND, HIS HAND ON HER WAIST. I TOOK FIVE PHOTOS AND SENT THEM TO HER HUSBAND WITH A LOCATION PIN. HALF AN HOUR LATER, MY HUSBAND CALLED ME IN A PANIC…

The instant I saw my husband’s arm settle around my best friend’s waist, something inside me broke—and something colder took its place.

They walked through the revolving doors of the Bellmont Hotel laughing together, completely unaware that I was standing on the opposite side of the street.

I didn’t yell.

I didn’t chase them.

I simply pulled out my phone.

Five photographs.

The first clearly captured Daniel’s face.

The second showed Melissa gazing up at him with a smile.

The third caught his hand resting around her waist.

The fourth included the Bellmont Hotel sign above them.

For the fifth, I waited.

Until they kissed.

Then I opened my contacts and found one name.

Melissa’s husband.

Ryan.

I sent him all five pictures along with a location pin.

Bellmont Hotel. 3:17 p.m.

Thirty seconds later, he replied.

Are you sure that’s today?

I’m standing across the street.

Three dots appeared.

Vanished.

Then appeared again.

Don’t leave.

I nearly laughed.

People had always confused my silence with weakness.

Daniel certainly had.

For eleven years, he’d introduced me as “the quiet one.” At parties, he interrupted me, corrected me, and sometimes joked about how helpless I’d be without him.

Melissa always laughed the hardest.

She’d been my closest friend since college.

When my mother died, Melissa held my hand through the funeral.

When Daniel and I nearly lost our home because of his failed restaurant investment, she showed up with groceries.

And apparently, somewhere between comforting me and drinking my wine, she decided she wanted my husband too.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

Exactly thirty-four minutes after I sent Ryan the photographs.

I answered.

“Hello?”

“Claire.” He sounded breathless. “Where are you?”

I stared across the street at the hotel.

“Walking.”

“Where?”

“Why?”

There was a pause.

Then I heard shouting behind him.

Melissa’s voice cut through the noise.

“Daniel, do something!”

His breathing changed.

“Did you send Ryan something?”

For the first time that afternoon, I smiled.

“Why would you ask me that?”

“Claire, listen to me—”

“No. You listen.”

Silence.

“You have exactly one opportunity to decide what your next sentence is.”

He still chose badly.

“It’s not what it looks like.”

I looked down at the photograph of his lips pressed against hers.

“Interesting choice.”

“Claire—”

I ended the call.

Then I walked home.

Daniel thought adultery was the worst secret he’d hidden from me.

He was wrong.

Three weeks earlier, I had uncovered something else.

And unlike a broken heart, what I’d discovered could send someone to prison.
