Minutes before boarding my solo flight to Maui, I came back from the restroom and found my entire family gone—leaving my crying six-year-old niece holding a sticky note: “Surprise! Babysitting duty. You’ll have so much fun together in paradise!” They had switched off their phones to trap me. Furious, I called her wealthy ex-husband instead: “Mark, your ex-wife just abandoned your daughter at Gate 14.” When they landed, the FBI and child services were waiting.

Part 1

I had saved for nearly two years for a solo ten-day vacation at an exclusive Maui resort. After brutal eighty-hour weeks at my design agency and helping cover my parents’ unexpected car repairs, I desperately needed peace.

Coincidentally, my older sister, Jessica, our parents, and her six-year-old daughter, Lily, had booked a separate family trip to Orlando, departing from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport around the same time. We met at the central concourse food court for breakfast before heading to our gates.

During breakfast, she kept hinting at how wonderful child-free travel must be, while our mother casually remarked that family should always help overwhelmed mothers. I ignored them, checked my boarding pass, and went to the ladies’ restroom twenty minutes before boarding began at Gate B12.

When I returned with my carry-on, my entire family had vanished.

Alone on a vinyl waiting bench sat my six-year-old niece, Lily, clutching a worn stuffed rabbit and crying hard enough to leave her cheeks red. Jessica and my parents were nowhere in sight.

I rushed over, dropping to my knees. “Lily, honey, what happened? Where is your mommy?”

Still sniffling, Lily handed me a neon-pink sticky note attached to the handle of her tiny rolling suitcase.

In Jessica’s familiar bubbly handwriting, it read: “Surprise, Brooke! Babysitting duty! Mom and Dad agree that you need some practice being selfless, and I desperately need a real girl’s vacation without packing juice boxes. You’ll have so much fun together in paradise! See you back in Atlanta in ten days!”

My panic instantly turned into fury. I called Jessica, then Mom, then Dad. Every call went straight to voicemail—they had deliberately turned off their phones after boarding their Orlando flight.
