After I Lost My Husband, I Found Bills Showing He’d Paid Another Woman’s Rent for 27 Years – When I Went to See Her, I Nearly Fainted at Who She Was
After my husband passed away, I discovered records showing that he had been paying another woman’s rent for twenty-seven years.
I immediately assumed the worst.
But when I finally drove to her house and saw who opened the door, I nearly collapsed.
My husband, Michael, died recently after battling cancer.
Losing him completely shattered me.
We had been married for thirty-eight years.
Together, we raised three children and later became grandparents to four wonderful grandchildren.
Michael and I had known each other since high school.
After college, we married almost immediately, and from that point on, we built our entire lives around each other.
I truly believed I knew everything there was to know about him.
Apparently, I didn’t.
About a month after the funeral, I finally gathered enough strength to enter Michael’s home office.
Until then, I had kept the door closed.
Everything inside still looked exactly the way he had left it.
His chair.
His pens.
His papers.
Even the coffee mug sitting near the computer.
I started packing his belongings into boxes.
Most of what I found was ordinary.
Tax records.
Old warranties.
Receipts.
Bank statements.
Documents he had collected over the years.
Then I opened the bottom drawer of his desk.
Inside was a thick folder I had never seen before.
I almost placed it in a box without looking.
But something made me open it.
That decision changed everything.
Inside were rent receipts for a property in another city several hours away from our home.
I frowned immediately.
I didn’t recognize the address.
Michael had never mentioned owning or renting anything there.
His name wasn’t listed as a tenant.
But when I looked more closely, I saw records showing that the rent had been paid from Michael’s personal account.
Every month.
I kept searching through the folder.
Then I found older receipts.
More of them.
All connected to the same address.
And all associated with the same woman.
Margaret.
I had never heard that name before.
Not once in thirty-eight years of marriage.
My hands began shaking as I dug deeper into the stack.
Then I found the oldest receipt.
It was dated twenty-seven years earlier.
I stared at it in disbelief.
Michael had apparently been paying this woman’s rent for twenty-seven years.
Nearly three decades.
I lowered myself into his office chair because suddenly I didn’t trust my legs.
Who was Margaret?
The obvious explanation entered my mind immediately.
Had she been his mistress?
Had my husband secretly maintained another relationship for most of our marriage?
The thought made me feel sick.
But the more I considered it, the less sense it seemed to make.
Michael and I had spent nearly our entire adult lives together.
We had raised children together.
Taken vacations.
Celebrated anniversaries.
