He married the woman everyone called “the ugliest” daughter of a powerful family for money. But on their wedding night, he found bl00d beneath her dress. She whispered, “My father did this.”

PART 2: THE HIDDEN PLAN

Manuel cleaned Rosalie’s wound himself, asking permission before every touch.

“No doctor chosen by your father will enter this house again,” he promised.

Rosalie did not fully trust him, but it was the first promise she had heard that did not sound like a threat.

Over the following weeks, their business arrangement slowly changed.

Rosalie reviewed the estate accounts and uncovered fraudulent charges harming the workers. Manuel dismissed the corrupt manager and returned the missing money.

When a dressmaker insulted Rosalie and suggested hiding her beneath dark fabric, Manuel removed the woman immediately—then apologised for acting without Rosalie’s approval and allowed her to choose her own replacement.

It was not love yet.

But it was respect, which felt almost as rare.

Emmett continued trying to control her.

Dr Callaway arrived without warning, claiming Rosalie required an urgent mental evaluation. Manuel turned him away in front of the entire household.

Two days later, Rosalie’s assistant, Naomi, mistakenly drank hot chocolate intended for Rosalie and collapsed.

An independent doctor found a dangerous amount of sedative in the cup.

“It was meant for me,” Rosalie said beside Naomi’s hospital bed.

That night, Rosalie led Manuel to her mother’s private archive room, which Emmett had been legally forced to transfer to Pinecrest.

The key opened a locked chest.

Inside were letters, bank records, and a notebook written in Lorelei’s coded language. Ordinary household words concealed illegal payments. “Candles” meant bribes. “Repairs” referred to money paid to corrupt officials.

Together, Rosalie and Manuel decoded the ledger.

Emmett had stolen the inheritance Lorelei left to Rosalie—land, company shares, and a trust that would become hers upon marriage or when she turned thirty.

Then they found a blue folder.

It contained payments connected to the scandal that destroyed Manuel’s father.

“My father was framed,” Manuel whispered.

Emmett had ruined the Nelson family because Manuel’s father had discovered his fraud.

Rosalie struggled to breathe.

“I was seventeen. I was locked away. I knew nothing.”

Manuel hesitated, anger briefly clouding his expression.

Then he reached for her.

“You are not responsible for your father’s crimes. Forgive my silence.”

The folder contained something even worse: a forged marriage clause stating that if Rosalie died and Manuel was investigated, her fortune would return to Emmett.

There were also photographs of a dangerous highway curve and a note explaining how an accident would make Manuel appear to be a desperate husband who murdered his wealthy wife.

Rosalie finally understood the plan.

Emmett had selected a financially ruined man because he would make the perfect suspect. Rosalie would die, Manuel would be imprisoned, and Emmett would reclaim the trust.

Before they could leave, the fire alarm erupted.

Smoke rushed beneath the archive door.

Someone had set the floor below them on fire.

Manuel grabbed the blue folder while Rosalie reached for Lorelei’s notebook.

A burning beam crashed between them.

Through the smoke, Rosalie saw a shadow slide the heavy bolt across the outside of the door.

They had been locked inside.

Then part of the ceiling collapsed onto Manuel.

For twelve years, Emmett had taught Rosalie that she was weak and useless.

That night, her strength saved both their lives.

She lifted the burning beam high enough for Manuel to pull free, supported him through a hidden service tunnel, and repeatedly struck the swollen exit door until the lock broke.

They collapsed onto the wet grass as flames consumed the archive room.

Lorelei’s notebook remained safely inside Rosalie’s coat.

They sheltered in an abandoned chapel at the edge of the estate.

As Rosalie treated Manuel’s injured shoulder, he looked at her through the soot.

“I married you to save my family,” he admitted. “But I no longer care about the company if saving it means betraying you.”

“My father will offer everything back.”

“Then I’ll refuse him.”

“Why?”

“Because I search for your face whenever you enter a room. Because I admire your courage and intelligence. And because tonight, the woman everyone called fragile saved my life.”

Rosalie kissed him first.
