The first bruise he left me was hidden beneath a silk sleeve. The last would be witnessed by four hundred wedding guests.

At the altar, Adrian Vale squeezed my hand so hard my rings dug painfully into my fingers. Cameras flashed. His smile never shifted.

They believed I stayed because I was frightened.

Three months after our engagement, I found my signature on a loan guarantee I’d never signed.

That same evening, Adrian caught me studying one of his financial statements. He laughed, kissed my forehead, and slipped the document from my hands.
