I Went to a Restaurant to Meet My Fiancé’s Parents for the First Time, but What They Did Made Me Cancel the Wedding

I believed meeting my fiancé’s parents would simply be another step toward the life we were building together. Instead, one disastrous dinner exposed the truth about Richard’s world. By the end of the evening, I knew I had no choice but to cancel the wedding.

I never imagined I would become the kind of person who called off her own wedding. But life has a way of forcing you into decisions you never thought you would face.

They lived in another state, and Richard always seemed to have a reason why we could not visit them. Once they learned about our engagement, however, they insisted on meeting me.

“They’re going to love you,” Richard assured me, squeezing my hand. “I’ve booked us a table at that fancy new place downtown for Friday night.”

I spent the following days panicking.

What should I wear?

What if they disliked me?

What if they told Richard to leave me?

I must have tried on nearly twelve outfits before settling on a classic black dress. I wanted to appear polished without looking as though I had tried too hard.
