My Mother-in-Law Kept Sneaking Into Our Bedroom and Going Through My Underwear Drawer Every Time She Visited – So One Day, I Set a Trap She Never Saw Coming
knew my mother-in-law had never respected boundaries. What I never expected was that my husband had been helping her search our bedroom. So when Kathryn screamed my name from upstairs, I knew she had finally discovered the truth I had deliberately left in my underwear drawer.
When I married Austin, I already understood that his mother had no concept of personal space. Kathryn never entered a room like a visitor. She walked in like a supervisor inspecting a property. She opened cupboards while talking, rearranged piles I had intentionally left alone, and once reorganized my entire pantry by expiration date while I stood nearby holding two bags of groceries.
Austin only laughed.
“That’s just Mom.”
That became his excuse for everything.
Kathryn had a spare key before I had even finished unpacking. Austin gave it to her because, according to him, family should be able to help during emergencies. Somehow, I became unreasonable for mentioning that most emergencies did not involve his mother letting herself in on a Wednesday afternoon to examine our coat closet.
At first, her behavior was irritating rather than frightening. She refolded towels, moved my mail, and smoothed wrinkles from the untouched guest-room bedspread. She behaved as though every object in my home required her approval.
I convinced myself ignoring her was easier.
Then I noticed my underwear drawer.
The first time, I simply stood there looking at it. Several items had been folded differently. One bra was upside down. A pair of black underwear I clearly remembered pushing to the back was sitting on top.
I closed the drawer and told myself I was mistaken.
The second time happened after Kathryn came for lunch and wandered upstairs without giving a reason. That evening, I found one of my sleep bras inside my sock drawer.
I stood there holding it, embarrassed by how deeply it upset me.
