Part 2

“I was protecting you!” she protested.

“No,” I interrupted. “You manipulated a family photograph to make him question our marriage.”

She tried defending herself.

But I’d heard enough.

“Please leave.”

She looked toward Andrew.

“You’re going to let her throw your own mother out?”

Andrew opened the door.

“She asked you to leave, Mom.”

For the first time, his mother had nothing to say.

After she left, Andrew approached my bed.

“Emily, I’m so sorry.”

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you answer my calls?”

He lowered his head.

“I wanted to speak with Daniel first.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“So you trusted your mother’s accusation more than your wife?”

He remained silent.

“I woke up frightened and alone. One of our daughters was crying, and I couldn’t even lift her because I was recovering from surgery.”

Andrew began crying.

“Please let me stay. I want to make things right.”

Part of me wanted to forgive him immediately.

But another part remembered the empty chair beside my hospital bed.

The promise he’d broken.

And the calls he’d deliberately ignored.

“I’m recovering at my mother’s house,” I told him. “I’ll decide what happens to our marriage when I’m ready.”

Andrew nodded slowly.

Before leaving, he gently touched one daughter’s tiny foot.

“I love you,” he whispered.

“I know,” I replied.

But love without trust wasn’t enough anymore.

After he left, Mom helped me hold both babies.

One little hand wrapped around my finger.

For ten years, I’d dreamed of this moment.

It wasn’t the beginning I’d imagined.

But as I looked at my daughters, I knew one thing with certainty.

Whatever happened to my marriage, I would never allow anyone to make my children feel unwanted or unloved.
