Decades Of Honoring My Missing College Sweetheart Unraveled At An Airport

For fifty five years I believed the man I loved had disappeared forever during the Vietnam War. I was twenty one years old when Thomas vanished and I am now seventy six. We met in college when I was eighteen and he was an engineering student who proved that engineers could be romantic partners. Before his deployment we sat together on the porch of my parents where he promised he would return to me so we could formally get engaged. When his aircraft went down an officer told me they could not completely rule out his survival which gave me hope for decades. I spent years checking newspaper reports and prisoner release lists but his name never appeared and by 1973 I had lost contact with his family. Despite the gentle urging of my friend Ruth to let someone share my burden I kept my grief private. I traveled alone every year on his birthday to a memorial honoring missing service members always bringing a single white rose and our old college photograph to share my life updates with a man I believed was gone.

During my recent trip I stepped into the airport arrivals hall and noticed a young man holding an identical copy of the college photograph I carried in my purse. I stopped completely in my tracks as he approached and confirmed my name before explaining that his grandfather Thomas had given him the picture. My grip tightened on my suitcase as I told him Thomas was my fiance but the young man introduced himself as Daniel and revealed a truth that shattered my understanding of the past. He explained that his grandfather was alive and had asked him to bring me to their home. I was utterly paralyzed as Daniel shared how Thomas had survived the aircraft incident and remained a captive until his release in 1973. Daniel had tracked my flight down using old school newsletters and articles about my memorial visits because his grandfather was now very sick. Overwhelmed by this impossible reality I called Ruth to explain the situation before agreeing to take the forty minute drive to discover the truth. Along the way Daniel revealed that Thomas had married a nurse named Margaret and built an entire family while I was still mourning his disappearance.

When we arrived at the house I found Thomas sitting near a window with a blanket resting across his knees. His hair was white and his hands trembled but I immediately recognized the eyes of the man I had mourned for over half a century. He called my name quietly but I remained standing in a room surrounded by photographs of a life he had built while I waited for him. I demanded to know when he had returned home and he confessed he had been back since 1973. He explained that after his release he spent months in a hospital where he fell in love with Margaret who helped him recover from captivity. When I asked why he never came back or wrote to me he admitted that Margaret became pregnant and he decided to marry her instead. He claimed he was ashamed and afraid to confront our past so he convinced himself I had moved on and married someone else. He admitted he could not bear the thought of disrupting his comfortable new life so he deliberately allowed me to continue believing he was missing in action.
